[The User] is the Canadian duo of composer Emmanuel Madan and architect Thomas McIntosh. This music is created by playing Silo #5, an immense abandoned grain storage facility as tall as a 20 storey building and a quarter of a mile long, which stands in the port at Montréal, Canada. The natural acoustics of the building are set resonating by controlled use of a series of feedback loops. [The User] is intending to perform this music using an ISDN connection to the grain silo as part of next weekend's Kill Your Timid Notion Festival in Dundee.

Interview: Brian Eno
Brian Eno currently has a couple of CDs out. One is a collection of studio out-takes from his proliferation of recordings, lovingly compiled by his studio assistant Marlon Weyeneth. But Mixing It went to speak to him at length about his other project, January 07003: Bell Studies for the Clock of the Long Now. This is a study of bell ringing and how it can be applied to a clock which would mark the passage of time over 10,000 years: a complicated premise which is explained in detail in a booklet accompanying the CD.

Music details:
: Fixed Ratio; Reversed harmonics; deep glass bells; Changes for January 07003 soft bells Hillis algorithm; Lithuanian bell study; Tsar Kolokol III and friends; German-style ringing
album: January 07003: Bell Studies for the Clock of the Long Now
